INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR CHILD WELFARE
San José, April 20, 2004
Dear Colleagues:
Your Support is Important.
First of all, let me express my appreciation to all those that gave
their support to the Executive Committee's decision to change the
external auditor's firm for this year.
Also, my thanks to those that have already send
their 2004 membership fees to us or directly to our Bank. The sooner
you are able to pay your dues the better we can program next year's
budget and expenditures.
IFCW Website.
Two things in relation to our website: a) More that 1.200 "hits"
were recorded last month at our website. While this number is still
very low by any standard, it should be viewed as a starting point
of reference for future use of this information tool. I do hope
that as more member collaboration is received and shown in the web
for the benefit of all members and, indeed, of all individuals interested
in child welfare, we will increase the number of visitors to our
site; b) I forgot last month to tell you that our site has a special
section "Only for Members", which can only be accessed by members
that have a special code and password. Attached to this letter (mailed
version) you will find the necessary information to use this section.
Executive Program of Interest.
The John F. Kennedy School of Government at the University of Harvard,
USA, offers a series of Executive Programs for CEOs of private enterprises.
These programs cover a wide range of topics, among which it is important
to mention some that might be of interest to IFCW members:
- Leadership for the 21 st . Century
- Performance Measurement for Effective
Management of Nonprofit Organizations
- Leaders in Development
- Driving Government Performance
Should you like to obtain further information about
this program you may wish to visit: www.execprog.org
.
International Conference in Canada.
Our member, Child Welfare League of Canada, among others, is sponsoring
an International Conference titled: "Promoting Resilient Development
in Children Receiving Care". This event will take place in Ottawa,
Canada, August 16-19, 2004. Should you wish to obtain further information
please contact: www.cwlc.ca/conference
.
WorldForum 2004.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of your personal participation
in this WorldForum. It is our fifteenth anniversary, a fact that
speaks well for the solid roots of our association. With this event,
we will have held WorldForums in all the regions of the world. The
most important aspect, however, is the fact that this effort is
done so you can have the opportunity to share with colleagues about
up-to-date issues related to child welfare and to learn about the
situation of children in different areas of our planet.
I would like to suggest that, since you already know the dates of
the WorldForum (September 27 to October 1, 2004), you start making
the necessary travel arrangements. Soon you will be receiving detailed
information about registration, venue, hotels, etc.
While the invitation to the WorldForum will include this aspect,
I would be particularly interested in knowing, at your earliest
convenience, if you would be willing to participate as speaker in
a Work Group. The central theme of the event is the role of NGOs
in relation to the preparation and implementation of the National
Action Plans but - of course - we will also pay special attention
to other areas of child welfare that are of interest to groups of
members.
Argentina offers many possibilities for further academic and work-related
contacts, as well as a series of natural wonders (glaciers, falls,
whales, etc.) that can be pursued after or before the WorldForum
at very favourable prices.
New Members
I have not insisted on this point in the last few letters, but this
does not mean that it has lost its importance or urgency. Our strength
is in numbers, because the more members the more possibilities to
share and to learn about new approaches to child care. So, please
try to identify colleagues that you think can benefit from being
part of IFCW and suggest to them that they apply for membership.
I will make sure that their application is processed speedily.
Sincerely yours,
Rolando Quirós - PRESIDENT
