Postponement of CONGO ’s Board Meeting and Launch of CONGO ’s Asia Regional Committee (originally scheduled for 14, 15 and 16 December 2008) – Message from CONGO ’s President

CONGO Officers, under the chairmanship of CONGO 's President Liberato Bautista, agreed during a telephone conference on 1 December 2008 to postpone CONGO 's next Board meeting. The meeting had originally been scheduled to take place on the premises of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand on 14 and 15 December 2008, followed by the launch of CONGO 's Asia Regional Committee on 16 December 2008. The Officers affirmed that CONGO remains committed to holding that Board meeting and are therefore contemplating to conduct it at AIT some time between February and March 2009.

UPR: Geneva Course for Defenders from the Regions – Course, 1 – 11 December 2008, Geneva

CONGO and Geneva for Human Rights – Global Training (GHR) are organising a Geneva course for human rights defenders from the regions, attending the 3rd session of the Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) on the Universal Periodic Reviews (UPR) entitled “Course on the Human Rights Council, International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, International Procedures and Diplomacy”. The course will take place from 1 to 11 December 2008 in CONGO ’s Conference Room, Avenue de la Paix 11, in Geneva .

60 years Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 60 years CONGO , 4 December 2008, Vienna

CONGO Vienna is organising in partnership with the City of Vienna an event with presentations and discussions under the theme “60 years Human Rights and 60 years CONGO ” on 4 December 2008 at 15:00 hours at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), Press Room C03.

This event will be followed by a reception at the VIC Restaurant .

 

 

60 Years since the Adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Genocide Convention: Evaluating the Record – Conference, 9 – 10 December 2008, Jerusalem

The Bar Ilan University , Faculty of Law and Department of Political Studies, and other organisations are organising a conference under the title “60 Years since the Adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Genocide Convention: Evaluating the Record” from 9 to 10 December 2008 in Jerusalem .

The University of Geneva, Interdisciplinary Programme for Humanitarian Action (PIAH), is organising a book launch and panel debate on the occasion of the publication of “La haine de l’Occident: Questionnement, nuances et éclairages” by Mr Jean Ziegler. Freedom of Religion or Belief: Perspectives and Challenges after Sixty Years of United Nations Protection – One-Day Seminar, 8 December 2008, New York

The NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief (New York), Focus on Freedom of Religion or Belief, the Jacob Blaustein Institute, Bahá’í International Community, the Bristol Centre for the Study of Law and Religion, and International Centers at Brigham Young University are organising a one-day seminar on “Freedom of Religion or Belief: Perspectives and Challenges after Sixty Years of United Nations” on 8 December 2008 from 11:00 to 17:00 hours in New York.

Application for OHCHR Travel Scholarship to Attend the Durban Review Conference – Deadline 15 December 2008

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has announced that it will make available travel scholarships to support NGO representatives to attend the Durban Review Conference, which will be held from 20 to 24 April 2009, in Geneva , Switzerland . The deadline for applications for the Durban Review Conference travel support is 15 December 2008.

40 Years Club of Rome – 40 Years Future Research - Conference, 9 December 2008, Bratislava

The Slovak Association of the Club of Rome in cooperation with the European Support Centre of the Club of Rome are organising a conference entitled “40 Years Club of Rome – 40 Years Future Research” on 9 December 2008 from 9:00 to 13:30 hours in Bratislava. The Conference will attempt to outline the development of future research from the beginning of the Club of Rome until today, and will present the ongoing work of the Slovak Association of the Club of Rome.

International NGO Journal – Call for Papers

The International NGO Journal (INGOJ) is publishing solicited and unsolicited articles in all areas of NGO activities. INGOJ was founded to publish proposals, appraisals and reports of NGO projects. The aim of this initiative is to have centralised information on NGO activities, where stakeholders including beneficiaries of NGO services can find useful information about ongoing projects and obtain special assistance.

The Education Outreach Cluster is organising an annual Student Conference on Human Rights from 3 to 5 December 2008 in New York in cooperation with the UN International School and several NGOs. The African Youth Foundation is holding its annual ADLER Entrepreneurship Award event on 6 December 2008 in Bonn . This year the prize will focus “to award Diaspora Africans, for their contributions to their countries of origin as well as the success of the different European economies they find themselves in”.

Launch of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Prize – Call for Nominations

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is calling for nominations for an annual Human Rights Prize, which will reward "outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe ". Individuals and NGOs can be nominated for the prize by completing the application form and submitting it before 31 December 2008 to hrprize@coe.int.
