 Human Rights

7th session of the UN Human Rights Council, 3 - 28 March, Geneva

The main session of the second cycle - the 7th HRC session - will start with a High Level Segment and a General Segment. The provisional draft program of work is available on the HRC Extranet and the OHCHR Civil Society Unit circulated an Information note for NGOs, as well as an informal note on the modalities for NGO oral interventions. An NGO Orientation session organised by the OHCHR, CONGO and the ISHR will take place on 6 March 2007 (14.00-15.00, in Room XXI). More information coming soon on the CONGO website. Read .

 Universal Periodic Review / Human Rights Council, 7-18 April & 5-16 May, Geneva

The first two sessions of the HRC Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will take place on 7-18 April and 5-16 May 2008. The Human Rights Council just proceeded with the selection of the members of the Troikas of Rapporteurs for all countries to be reviewed during the first two sessions of the UPR Working Group. The troika of Rapporteurs will facilitate the preparation of the interactive dialogue and the report of the Working Group. The documents related to the 16 countries to be reviewed during the 1st session of the Working Group, including the national report, the OHCHR compilation and the summary of other stakeholders' contributions, will be shortly released on the OHCHR website.  OHCHR & Friedrich Ebert Stiftung - Irregular Migration, 6 March, Geneva

The 6th edition of International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) - a privileged platform dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights within the very heart of the international capital of human rights, Geneva - will focus this year, in conjunction with celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on Darfur, Burma, Mauritania, Russia, China, populisms in Europe, international justice, environmental refugees.  International Women's Day

Women for the World, 7 March, Geneva

The Working Group Women for the World (CONGO Committee on the Status of Women) invites you to celebrate the International Women's Day on 7 March at the Geneva International Conference Center (CICG). Under the auspices of the CONGO Committee of the Status of Women, the workshop/panel "Celebrating Women / Faire Honneur aux Femmes" will feature inspiring women and allow participants to share experiences on gender issues and the role of women in society.  ILO "Investing in Decent Work for Women: Not just right, but smart", 7 March, Geneva

Thoughout the years, the ILO has firmly established itself in the Geneva community, as well as through the field offices, as a regular host for a major series of events commemorating International Women's Day, highlighting the role and/or achievements of women in a particular field of work, or associating the events with the ILO's ongoing work in gender equity and in improving the situation of women in the world of work. This year, the slogan "Investing in Decent Work for women: Not just right, but smart", is based on the overwhelming evidence that promoting equality is not only a matter of human rights, but it also makes good economic sense. The UNCTAD Hearing with civil society and private sector will take place on 3 March 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in room XXVI at the Palais des Nations.  UNAIDS: Speaker Nomination Deadline for NGOs in Consultative Status with ECOSOC, 11 March

The deadline for NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC wishing to nominate speakers for the 2008 High-level Meeting (HLM) on HIV/AIDS is now 11 March. No nominations will be accepted after the 11 March deadline. However, ECOSOC NGOs can still register to attend the HLM after the deadline has passed. See here the online nomination form and

 WB & IMF Policy Dialogues for Civil Society Organizations, 10-13 April, Washington D.C.

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund civil society teams will be offering an Orientation Session on 9 April, for interested CSO representatives attending the 2008 Spring Meetings.
