Meeting of ECOSOC on Global Food Crisis, 20 May 2008, New York
The
President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council Léo
Mérorès will convene a Special Meeting of ECOSOC on Global Food

7th
special session of the Human Rights Council, 10.00 am, 22 May, Geneva
The
Human Rights Council will hold its 7th Special Session
on "The negative impact on the realization of the right to food
of the worsening of the world food crisis, caused interalia by the
soaring food prices". More information, including the draft

General
Assembly Thematic Debate on Human Security, 22 May, New York
As
part of the implementation of the outcome of the UN World Summit
which requested Member States to discuss and define the notion of
human security in the General Assembly, a thematic debate will be
held on 22 May 2008 at 10.00 am in the ECOSOC Chamber. A background

Launch
of the African Economic Outlook 2008, 23 May, New York
The
UN-DESA Division for Sustainable Development, Office of the Special
Advisor on Africa and the OECD Development Centre will organise
the Launch of the African
Economic Outlook 2008,
a joint publication of the OECD Development Centre, the African
Development Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for
Africa. The event will be held on Friday, the 23rd of May, from
1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m, at the United Nations Secretariat Building,
Conference Room 8. Please

Cluster
of WSIS-related events 2008, 19-23 May, Geneva
The
implementation mechanism at the international level of the World
Summit on the Information Society is
organised and moderated or facilitated by UN agencies according
to the 11 Action Lines identified by WSIS. More information, including

Information
session on stakeholders' participation in the activities of the
ITU, 21 May, Geneva
The
ITU Secretariat will organise an Information
session on ITU Open Consultation
on the participation of all Relevant Stakeholders in the Activities
of the Union related to WSIS, in the framework of the consultation
process open to all civil society entities accredited to WSIS. The
session will take place at 1.00-2.00 pm in Room C2, ITU. More information

Commission
on Science and Technology for Development, 26-30 May, Geneva
The
11th
Session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development
(CSTD) is to be held at the Palais des Nations in conference room
XVIII, from 26 to 30 May 2008. The session will represent the second
official United Nations review of the progress made in implementing
the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
at the regional and international level. It also aims to identify
achievements, gaps and challenges, as well as future actions needed

Election
of new Members of the Human Rights Council, 21 May, New York
The
General Assembly will elect 15 new Members of the UN Human Rights
Council. The list of candidates as well as their voluntary pledges
and commitments are available on the UN
GA website.
8th
regular session of the Human Rights Council, 2-18 June, Geneva
The
8th regular session of the Human Rights Council will
be marked by the adoption by the Council of the outcome of the Universal
Periodic Review of 32 countries and by the consideration of the
reports of a number of Special Procedures. The deadline for
the submission of written statements is Friday 23 May.
The 8th session of the Council will be followed by an
organisational meeting of the Council on 19 and 20 June. The provisional

Informal
Discussion on Energy Policy Issues, 27 May 2008, Geneva
UNEP will host presentations
on Subsidies to nuclear energy in the United States and Energy
policy options to promote sustainable development in the context
of East Asian regional economic integration, taking place at
9.30am-12.30pm at International Environment House I, Room 2. For

The

DPI/NGO Conference will
be held 3-5 September at UNESCO in Paris, France under the chairmanship
of Shamina de Gonzaga. The organisers still welcome suggestions
of speakers' names through the Speaker
