CoNGO Civil Society Development Forum 2009 – Implementing the Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments in regard to Global Public Health, 2 – 4 July 2009, Geneva

CoNGO held its Civil Society Development Forum (CSDF) 2009 from 2 to 4 July 2009 at the International Labour Office in Geneva. It was conducted back-to-back with ECOSOC’s High-Level Segment (6 – 9 July 2009) of its 2009 Substantive Session, which focused in 2009 on the theme “Implementing the Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments in regard to Global Public Health”.

The Outcome Document of the CSDF 2009 – Geneva Component is now available here <http://www.ngocongo.org/index.php?what=news&id=10509> . Serving as the main output of CoNGO’s Forum, this document was circulated to all member governments of ECOSOC during its High-Level Segment.

The statement delivered by CoNGO’s President at the General Debate of the High-Level Segment and CSDF 2009 statements will be made available on www.ngocongo.org <http://www.ngocongo.org/>  shortly.

Youth Participation at the CSDF 2009: Reaffirming the President of CoNGO’s goal to ensure the visible participation of youth in the work of CoNGO, the CSDF 2009 had an intentional focus on youth and young participants. Prior to the opening of the Forum, CoNGO’s President met with these young participants to ensure their constructive participation in the CSDF 2009. Moreover, the final remarks concluding the CSDF 2009 were prepared and delivered by a young participant.

The New York Component of the CSDF 2009 is scheduled to take place on 15 and 16 October 2009. A follow-up event will take place in Vienna on 11 November 2009. More information will be made available on CoNGO’s website <http://www.ngocongo.org/>  in due course.

UN Events and Announcements:

ECOSOC Substantive Session, 6 - 31 July 2009, Geneva

The High-Level Segment (6 – 9 July 2009) of ECOSOC’s Substantive Session has now been concluded with the consensus adoption of its Ministerial Declaration on Implementing Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments on Global Public Health. The Substantive Session is now continuing with its Operational Activities Segment (15 – 17 July 2009), which is to “review how far the UN system has gone in implementing the guidance of the General Assembly on operational activities”. Following the Operational Activities Segment, the Humanitarian Affairs Segment will take place (20 – 24 July 2009) to provide a “forum where Member States and Humanitarian Organisations discuss the challenges, opportunities and activities related to the strengthening of the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance of the United Nations”. UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict – Screening of Gaza Public Hearings, 16 – 17 July 2009, Geneva

On 6 and 7 July 2009, testimonies were presented by people from Israel and the West Bank, as well as other experts, to the UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict.

These hearing sessions in Geneva were preceded by public hearings conducted on 28 and 29 June 2009 in Gaza City during which people from Gaza presented testimonies to this Mission.

The UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict will screen these public hearings (conducted in Gaza) on 16 and 17 July 2007 from 11:00 to 16:00 hours both days in Room XVI at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

Observation of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, 10 August, New York

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, in cooperation with the CoNGO Committee on the International Decade for the World’s Indigenous People and the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is organising an event observing the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. The event will take place on 10 August 2009 from 14:00 to 17:00 hours at the UN HQ in New York.

2009 Social Forum of the Human Rights Council, 31 August – 2 September 2009, Geneva

The Human Rights Council has tentatively scheduled its 2009 Social Forum from 31 August to 2 September 2009 in Room XX at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. This event is open to all stakeholders.

The 2009 Social Forum is to focus on:

(a)              Negative impacts of economic and financial crises on efforts to combat poverty,

(b)              National anti-poverty programmes: best practices of States in implementing social security programmes from a human rights perspective,

(c)              International assistance and cooperation in combating poverty.

“For Peace and Development: Disarm Now! ¡Desarme Ahora! Trabajamos por la Paz y el Desarrollo”, 62nd Annual DPI/NGO Conference, 9 – 11 September 2009, Mexico City

The 62nd Annual UN Department of Public Information – Non-Governmental Organizations Section (DPI/NGO) conference is scheduled from 9 to 11 September 2009 in Mexico City. Following last year’s DPI/NGO conference held in Paris, this year’s conference will be the second DPI/NGO annual conference to take place outside New York and Geneva. The overarching theme for this event will be “For Peace and Development: Disarm Now! ¡Desarme Ahora! Trabajamos por la Paz y el Desarollo”.

Hearing with Civil Society and the Private Sector – 56th Annual Session of UNCTAD’s Trade and Development Board, 16 September 2009, Geneva

As part of the 56th Annual Session of the Trade and Development Board of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), a hearing with civil society and the private sector is being organised on 16 September 2009 from 15:00 to 18:00 hours at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

At the margins of the Trade and Development Board theme - “the global economic crisis and the necessary policy response”, this hearing is to provide an opportunity to follow up on the discussions from the recently concluded UNCTAD Public Symposium and the UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development.

Civil society organisations will also have opportunities to contribute at related events during the meeting of the Trade and Development Board, and are encouraged to submit inputs and questions for circulation to Member States prior to the hearing.

The report of the hearing will be presented to the Trade and Development Board at its closing plenary on 25 September 2009 by a civil society representative.

OHCHR Consultation on Operationalizing the Framework for Business and Human Rights Presented by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Issue of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises, 5 – 6 October 2009, Geneva

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will hold a consultation on operationalizing the framework for business and human rights presented by the special representative of the Secretary-General on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises. The meeting is scheduled on 5 and 6 October 2009 in Room XVIII at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

International Peace Bureau Annual Conference, 13 – 15 November 2009, Washington D.C.

The International Peace Bureau Annual Conference will be held from 13 to 15 November 2009, in Washington D.C. The provisional title for the conference is “Rolling back militarism: a task for the global movement”.

The programme will include a central event (the weekend conference) and additional activities before and after, depending on the wishes of partners and participants. Suggestions are welcome. This is intended to be a participatory event, including a top-class range of speakers, cultural presentations and opportunities to interact with key people in Washington D.C. and beyond. World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Call for Registration, 19 November 2009

The Women’s World Summit Foundation is campaigning to prioritize the prevention of abuse and violence against children. Launched in 2000, the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse (19 November) is intended to create a global culture towards the worldwide prevention of child abuse.

Launch of “Fourth Pillar” Online Discussion Space for the IMF Governance Reforms

The organisation “New Rules for Global Finance” has recently launched an online discussion space for civil society focusing on the process for governance reforms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development: Online dialogue now open

With the central theme “Integrating Migration Policies into Development Strategies for the Benefit of All”, the 3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development is now scheduled for 2 to 5 November 2009.
