61st DPI/NGO Conference - Deadline for workshop proposals: 9 June 2008

The 61st DPI/NGO Conference on the theme "Reaffirming Human Rights For All: The Universal Declaration at 60" will be held 3-5 September at UNESCO in Paris, France. NGOs should submit workshop proposals before 9 June 2008, based on the following workshop criteria and guidelines. Read here more on line.

 8th regular session of the Human Rights Council, 2-18 June, Geneva

The 8th regular session of the Human Rights Council will be marked by the adoption by the Council of the outcome of the Universal Periodic Review of 32 countries and by the consideration of the reports of a number of Special Procedures. The 8th regular session will be followed on 19 and 20 June by the first organizational meeting of the 3rd cycle of the Council. The provisional draft program of work and an information note for NGOs are available at the OHCHR website.

. 6 June, 14.00-15.00, Room XXII, Palais des Nations: "NGO orientation session on the 8th HRC session", organised by the Human Rights Council Secretariat, in cooperation with the Conference of NGOs (CONGO) and the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR).

. 10 and 17 June, 13.00-14.00, Room TBA, Palais des Nations: "An introduction on the HRC and its mechanisms (for newcomers and everyone else)" - An encounter with experienced human rights practitioners on how the UN human rights system functions (or not), to help NGO representatives to better approach and use the Council and its mechanisms, organised by the Special Committee of NGOs on Human Rights.

. 13 June, 13.00-15.00, Room TBA, Palais des Nations: "Lessons learned on civil society involvement in the Universal Periodic Review process", in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. This event will look at the first two sessions of the UPR working group and contribute to identifying recommendations for NGOs from countries to be reviewed in the next rounds of UPR.

. Universal Periodic Review: Reminder - The deadline for NGO submissions for the initial information on which the review would be based for countries to be examined by the 3rd HRC Working Group on UPR in December 2008 is 14 July 2008. NGO contributions should be sent to UPRsubmissions@ohchr.org.

General Assembly meeting on investment and climate change, 9 June, New York
The General Assembly will hold a follow-up meeting to its High-level Thematic Debate (11-13 February) focusing on investment and climate change, on 9 June 2008 at 10:00 am in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. This event is intended to provide investors and Member States an opportunity to exchange views and raise awareness about the scale of impact transnational flows of capital have on climate change and vice-versa. NGO representatives with a valid United Nations pass are welcome to attend. A program and background paper will be available shortly on the GA President website.

High-level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, 10-11 June 2008

The General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting on a comprehensive review of the progress achieved in implementing the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, taking place on 10 and 11 June. More information, including the list of invited NGOs and civil society entities, is available on the GA President website.

ECOSOC Substantive Session, 30 June - 24 July 2008, New York

The ECOSOC High Level Segment will include the first Development Cooperation Forum, on 30 June and 1 July, and the Annual Ministerial Review on 2-3 July focusing on "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to sustainable development". Those two new mechanisms are mandated to step up implementation of the United Nations development agenda. More information is available on the ECOSOC website.

CONGO Committees: Committee on Freedom of Religion and Belief - 5 June, Geneva

The next meeting of the Committee will take place on 5 June from 13.30 to 14.45 at the NGO Resource Centre (Palais des Nations). The Committee will complete its election process and look at the incidence of freedom of religion or belief issues on the UPR.

Special evening honouring the outgoing bureau of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women - 9 June, Geneva

The Geneva Committee on the Status of Women invites Geneva CONGO members to a special evening taking place on 9 June from 17.30 to 19.30 at WILPF Offices, Rue de Varembé 1.

CONGO Committees: Meeting on the setting up of an NGO Outer Space Committee - 13 June, Vienna

NGOs interested in the setting up of the NGO Outer Space Committee are invited to a meeting on 13 June 2008 at the Vienna International Centre. The future role of the new committee will be defined on that occasion.
